Safeguarding Event Guidance - Volunteer Code of Conduct

Core principles of safeguarding for junior parkrun in Australia.

All Volunteers are required to read and comply with the following:

  • parkrun Australia is committed to promoting the safety, welfare and wellbeing of all children and young people.
  • parkrun Australia, including event teams are committed to adhering to government policies and guidance, including reporting child protection concerns to statutory child protection agencies.
  • parkrun Australia promotes that the participation of children in any parkrun event is primarily for fun, being free from undue pressure from parents, other adults or their peers and in the full understanding they are participating in a timed walk, jog, run rather than a race.
  • Children who have concerns about an adult’s or other child’s behaviour (including bullying) should tell a trusted adult who will ensure the concern is taken seriously and dealt with. Volunteers at parkrun wear a bright high-visibility vest making it easier for children to identify an adult they may want to talk to if they have any concerns.
  • Confidentiality will be appropriately maintained at all times and the child’s safety and welfare must be the overriding consideration when making decisions on whether to share information about them.
  • All junior parkrun volunteers are required to hold a valid working with children check (WWCC) linked to volunteering at junior parkrun.

Any safeguarding concerns relating to the safety, welfare or wellbeing of children (defined as anyone yet to reach their 18th birthday) must be raised with the Event Director or Run Director. If concerns relate to any volunteers in the event team contact the parkrun Australia Safeguarding Lead by emailing [email protected].  Concerns may relate to physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, or any form of maltreatment or lack of care that leads to injury or harm. They may also relate to concerns of a safeguarding nature include bullying or pushy parenting.
